Welcome Mitchell Rhodes – Partnership and Sport Manager

We are delighted to introduce Mitchell Rhodes, Special Olympics New Zealand’s new Partnership and Sport Manager. With a background dedicated to fostering inclusive sport and recreation, alongside Mitch’s proven expertise in advising, educating, and collaborating with diverse stakeholders, we are pleased to welcome Mitch to the Special Olympics whānau and cannot wait for Mitch to meet our community.

Here’s a quick introduction to Mitch, what drives him and his goals as Partnership and Sport Manager.

What is your experience with inclusive sport and recreation?

I’ve come from the Halberg Foundation, with the background of working with young people with a disability. I really love the space and enjoy being able to provide opportunities for people who may have had limited chances to be active and to be involved with sport. So really excited about continuing to build in that space.

Why do you believe it is important to help provide these opportunities for people with an intellectual disability?

I’ve had a very fortunate sporting background as a young person and young adult. Everyone deserves the opportunity to be active in whatever way that they choose and that’s equally as important for people with an intellectual disability.

What does Special Olympics mean to you?

From afar I’ve seen the reach that Special Olympics has and seen the impact that engaging with Special Olympics programmes can have on the people that it supports. I’m really excited to be able to contribute and continue to support that work.

What is it that drew you to this role?

It’s always important for me to have a real purpose in the work that I’m doing and to be able to see first hand how the work I’m doing is impacting the community. I saw this as a great opportunity to put in some work, find out what is needed in the space and contribute in the best way that I can.

What are you most excited about in your new role?

It’s a great opportunity to learn. I think the breadth of sporting opportunities and programmes that Special Olympics offer is really exciting. A chance to go out and learn some new sports and see how they work within your space is a really cool opportunity as well as looking to grow them.
