New Zealand’s Fastest Man, Tiaan Whelpton to be an Ambassador for the National Summer Games

New Zealand’s fastest man, Tiaan Whelpton is going to be part of something special as an Ambassador for the 2025 Special Olympics National Summer Games, which are being hosted in Otautahi Christchurch from December 10-14 this year.

“Super excited! I can’t wait to watch the National Summer Games take place here at the end of the year” said Whelpton, when speaking about becoming an Ambassador for the games. “I think athletics, and sport in general, is an amazing thing that can bring a lot into anyone’s life.”

After claiming victory in both the 60m and 100m events at last weekend’s International Track Meet at Ngā Puna Wai in Christchurch, where the athletics events at the National Summer Games will also be held, Whelpton is set to compete in the New Zealand Track and Field Championships from March 6-9 before turning his focus to the World Indoor Champs in Nanjing, China later in March.

“We are delighted to welcome Tiaan to the Special Olympics in New Zealand Whānau” said Special Olympics New Zealand Chief Executive Fran Scholey. “It will be a huge thrill for our athletes to have New Zealand’s fastest man cheering them on as they compete in December.”

Whelpton, who lives and trains in Christchurch and graduated from the University of Canterbury,  joins fellow locals Scott Barrett and Jason Gunn as ambassadors for the National Summer Games. A big focus for all the National Summer Games ambassadors in the lead up to December’s event will be to help rally the local community in support of the games, with over 650 volunteers needed to ensure a smooth running of the games for the over 1350 athletes and 800 support staff who will be heading to Christuchuch for the event.

“Like our athletes, our volunteers will have a hugely rewarding, once-in-a-lifetime experience, and in some cases life-changing experience working with our athletes and enjoying the joy that Special Olympics brings to our athletes and everyone involved with them.” said Scholey

The National Summer Games will be an opportunity for athletes of all abilities to showcase their skills in front of family, friends, and supporters in what promises to be an unforgettable celebration of sport and unity. From track and field to swimming and basketball, the games will feature a wide range of events where athletes push their limits and inspire everyone around them.
