Special Olympics Healthy Hearing

Healthy Hearing is changing lives in communities across the globe, providing free ear screenings, and other medical services and products to a group that needs it the most - people with intellectual disabilities.

At the Special Olympics New Zealand 2013 National Summer Games, a team of clinical professionals and audiology students tested the athletes’ hearing.

During the course of the Games, the Healthy Hearing team screened the ears of 873 athletes; an amazing achievement in a busy environment! Where required athletes were referred for medical evaluation of their hearing and others were referred for audiological evaluation.

Goals of the Healthy Hearing Programme:

  1. Increase access to hearing care for Special Olympics athletes, as well as people with an intellectual disability.
  2. Raise audiologists' awareness of the hearing concerns of people with intellectual disabilities, including difficulties involved in accessing treatment.
  3. Develop a body of knowledge about ear canal hygiene of children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
