Rebecca Heath

Rebecca-Heath.JPGSpecial Olympics Hutt Valley athlete Rebecca Heath says she’s “honoured” to be selected to represent New Zealand at the World Winter Games in Austria.

“I’m so proud to represent my country, and am looking forward to meeting lots of people from different countries.”

Thirty-one year-old Rebecca joined Special Olympics Wellington around 14 years ago, and has recently moved to Special Olympics Hutt Valley where she competes in swimming and skiing. Rebecca has attended the National Summer Games in Christchurch, Palmerston North and Dunedin and has a host of medals to her name. From last year’s National Winter Games in Cardrona she came home with two silver medals.

In 2010 Rebecca also became a Global Messenger, when she graduated from Special Olympics New Zealand’s Athlete Leadership Programme in 2010.

“Special Olympics has given me confidence and I am fitter than I was. I also like meeting people, travelling to competitions and bringing home medals,” Rebecca says.

“Becoming a Global Messenger has given me confidence to speak out and spread the word about how good Special Olympics is.”

As well as keeping busy with sport, Rebecca also works full-time as a teacher aide at Wellington High School where she finished her schooling, and enjoys craft and spending time with her nine-month old nephew.
