Rachel Oemcke

Rachel-Oemcke-1.JPG31-year-old Rachel Oemcke is already hard at work training for the World Winter Games!

“I am going to the gym three times a week and doing lots of leg exercises that my coach has given me, and I'm swimming twice a week to get fit and ready for the Games. I also go to dance group on Saturday mornings, which I love.”

Rachel, who trains and competes with Special Olympics Manawatu, has a long history with Special Olympics, having first joined 19 years ago. She now competes in swimming, golf and skiing, and has previously represented New Zealand at the Australian National Games in 2006 and the Asia Pacific Games in 2013.

“I love trying out different sports and meeting new friends. And I loved that I can travel overseas with my team,” Rachel says.

“I really like skiing because I enjoy the training and the challenge. I like to go fast down the slopes. I think its awesome I have been selected for the World Winter Games in Austria, where the Sound of Music was made. I look forward to skiing on the mountain and meeting some new friends.”

Outside of Special Olympics Rachel keeps herself busy with her part-time job selling lollies, and enjoys dancing, bowling and cooking. She also loves music, reading, watching rugby and spending lots of time with her friends and family.

Thank you to Rachel's sponsors!
