Karen Erenstrom

IMG_8685.JPGKaren Erenstrom brings her prior experience at a World Winter Games to her role as Assistant Head of Delegation for the 2017 World Winter Games in Austria.

I was fortunate to go to the last World Winter Games in Korea, so I have volunteered to help again, given my experience and my ability to speak German,” Karen says.

“I have also skied in Austria a few times, so that should also be useful experience.”

Karen first got into Special Olympics about 12 years ago through her son Nicholas Fyfe, who skis and competes in powerlifting with Special Olympics Hutt Valley. In that time Karen has volunteered regularly at ski camps in both the North and South Island.

“It is so rewarding helping athletes learn to ski and improve their skiing. They are so enthusiastic and dedicated, and love competing,” Karen says.

“For example, Rebecca Heath, who only learnt to ski a couple of years ago, is now skiing confidently down the main chairlift runs and will be competing internationally in Austria. And we always have lots of fun at Special Olympics events.”

Karen says she knows that the World Winter Games in Austria will be a fantastic experience for all involved.

“I really want to see all of the athletes complete their races and come back with some great memories.”
