Jason Donovan

Jason-Donovan-1.JPGFor Special Olympics Kapiti athlete Jason Donovan the World Winter Games in Austria will be the second time he’s represented New Zealand at a World Games. In 2009 Jason was part of the New Zealand delegation to the World Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, where he won a silver medal and got two fourth placings.

“I’m really excited about going to the World Winter Games again,” Jason says. “I’m looking forward to meeting lots of new people.”

Jason’s been competing with Special Olympics Kapiti since 2004. As well as skiing, he competes in football and golf.

“Special Olympics has made a big difference to my life because I’ve been able to meet lots of new people and make new friends, which I really enjoy.”

As well as the World Winter Games in Idaho, Jason has also competed in golf at the National Summer Games in Palmerston North in 2009, where he won a silver medal, and in Dunedin in 2013, where he got a fourth placing. At last year’s National Winter Games at Cardrona Jason was very proud to win two gold medals.

As well as being a talented athlete, Jason works for a fencing company building security fences, and is a keen glider pilot and a skilled wood turner!

“Wood turning is just a hobby really, but I make bowls, chip and dip boards, chopping board, cheese platters, kids toys and Christmas decorations, which I give away to family and friends.”

Jason is also one of Special Olympics New Zealand’s Global Messengers, having graduated from the Athlete Leadership Programme in 2011. And if that wasn’t enough to keep him busy, he is also the Treasurer of disability advocacy organisation People First, and sits on the Capital & Coast District Health Board.
