Jane Haskell

IMG_8816.JPGJane Haskell says attending the World Winter Games combines three of her favourite things in life – skiing, travel and Special Olympics!

“I was a family supporter at the Winter Games in Boise, Idaho, and was also lucky enough to go to the 2013 Winter Games in Korea as a ski coach. It’s such a rewarding experience, and I’m really honoured to have been selected again for Austria.”

Jane first got into Special Olympics through her daughter Tessa, who got her first taste of Special Olympics when the family was living in Wanaka in 2000. A couple of years later they moved to Auckland and Tess joined Special Olympics North Harbour.

Jane’s now heavily involved with Special Olympics North Harbour as the Club’s Fundraising Coordinator. She is also an integral part of the Upper North Island snow sports group. She sits on the Snowsports Committee and helps coordinate the Snowplanet programme and annual winter snow camps. “Being out on the slopes with the general public is just the best thing for our athletes,” Jane says. “They are out there skiing with the public, riding the same chairlifts and eating in the same cafes. It’s a great PR stage for Special Olympics as people get to see just how capable our athletes are.

“For the 2017 World Winter Games I really want to do my utmost to see that our athletes ski better, faster, stay safe and be the best ambassadors they can be for New Zealand. I know they will have the most amazing time.”

Outside of Special  Olympics Jane has been a teacher of special needs students for 15 years, and loves cycling, hiking and boating, and doing anything with her family.
