Dave Cowie

Dave-Crowie.jpgSenior Constable Dave Cowie is looking forward to the challenge of being part of the New Zealand delegation to the World Winter Games in 2017, to helping our athletes achieve their goals, and to having a great time!

“We have a lot of fun with the Special Olympics athletes – everyone’s there to have a great time,” Dave says. “And it’s really satisfying to help them improve on their skills. It’s a real buzz.”

Dave first became involved with the Special Olympics New Zealand snow sports programme about six years ago through fellow Police officers, Head of Delegation Brian Benn and long-time volunteer Stew Hewett. With his ski experience and his involvement with the Police National Ski Championships, Dave made the perfect volunteer.

Since then he has been a regular volunteer at ski weekends, and also helped out at last year’s National Winter Games at Cardrona.

“There was such a great bunch of volunteers and athletes at the National Games, and I had a real blast, which made me want to put my hand up for Austria. I’ve also been to Austria before so I have an idea about how things will be over there.”

Outside of Special Olympics Dave is a keen multisport racer and mountain biker in the summer months, and enjoys getting out on the ski field as much as possible over winter. He has two sons who also ski. Dave’s eight-year-old daughter Tessa has Down Syndrome and is sure to be a future Special Olympics competitor – he’s hoping to teach her to ski this winter!
