Benjamin Blanche

Ben-Blanche-1-(1).jpgFor Ben Blanche, being selected for the Special Olympics World Winter Games delegation to Austria is a welcome opportunity to spend some more time on the slopes!

Twenty-nine-year-old Ben has been competing with Special Olympics Central Otago since 2005 and has tried his hand at several sports, but says skiing is his true passion.

“Over the years I have also done ten pin bowling and swimming, but I really enjoy the skiing best,” Ben says. “My favourite part of Special Olympics is the ski weekends and ski camps. I get to make friends and I get to go skiing everyday.”

When he’s not on the ski fields, Ben keeps busy with his part-time job at a local hotel, spending time with his family, playing cricket for the Cromwell Senior Reserves in the summer months, and getting out and about around Cromwell.

“I like living in Cromwell as I can do things for myself, like bike to work, or go to the shops. I also really like spending time with my Nanna in Christchurch.”

Ben competed at both the 2011 and 2015 National Winter Games in Cardrona and won three medals in 2015. He’s hoping to come home from the World Games with a medal too.

“I enjoy getting medals. I like having things to show friends and family - it makes me feel proud,” Ben says. “I am really looking forward to travelling overseas, making friends, and hopefully getting a medal.”
