When Special Olympics Manukau athlete Zachary Wicht enters the court his presence is certainly felt by both his team and his opponents. Physically he cuts a very large figure compared to many of his opponents and he is an incredible sportsman, scoring well and showing great defence.
Zachary has only been training with Special Olympics Manukau for the past four years but he has become an integral part of the team.
Ever humble, Zachary says his favourite thing about Special Olympics is “the awesome people I get to meet and catch up with”.
“I really like playing basketball games, especially the hard games, so I think I will be a good asset for the New Zealand team. I really like playing against different people,” he says.
Outside of Club training Zachary puts in the extra work and trains at the gym, practices ball skill exercises, and generally jumps at any opportunity to play basketball.
He lives independently and is completing a Bachelor of Computer Systems at Unitec as well as working part-time as a receptionist.
