Steven Bishop has been playing basketball in family teams since he could walk. Growing up he struggled to compete in mainstream competitions so when the opportunity arose eight years ago to join Special Olympics he jumped at it.
According to his supporters Special Olympics has had a very positive impact on his life. Steven has found he can enjoy playing his sport alongside people of similar abilities and be competitive.
“My favourite part about Special Olympics is meeting and socialising with other athletes. I’m looking forward to representing my country … and beating my brothers and cousins at something,” he says of the upcoming LA2015 World Summer Games.
Like many of his fellow Special Olympics New Zealand basketball athletes Steven is a keen NBA follower. His favourite team is the San Antonio Spurs and his favourite sportsperson is Hakeem Olajuwon. Outside of sport Steven enjoys fishing and camping, and always enjoys taking time out to watch the film ‘Grease’.
