A relative newcomer to Special Olympics New Zealand, Stephanie Davies has taken every opportunity the organisation has thrown her way.
A keen sportswoman Stephanie joined Special Olympics Manawatu in 2009, training in aquatics, indoor basketball, and athletics. In her first year of training with the Club she was selected to attend the National Summer Games in Palmerston North. In 2013 she was again selected to represent her region and returned with gold medals in the shot put, relay, and 100m run, and a silver medal in the 200m run.
As well as her sports training, Stephanie is one of Special Olympics New Zealand’s Global Messengers (Class of 2013) and over the past year has taken an active leadership and mentor role in her Club.
“I have made a lot of new friends through Special Olympics and love travelling to [sports] meets. I have attended the Nationals twice and am looking forward to going one step further and representing New Zealand. It will be a wonderful experience,” she says.
A fan of ABBA, Stephanie cites ‘Mamma Mia’ as her favourite film and is also partial to Shortland Street. Stephanie volunteers at Summerset Retirement Village assisting with activities for 12 hours a week.
