Special Olympics New Zealand has opened up pathways for competition for Pratima Patel that she believes she wouldn’t have had otherwise.
“I wouldn’t be able to do all the sports I do or compete in them without Special Olympics. I love playing sports and making friends. I’m really looking forward to representing New Zealand overseas at the LA2015 World Summer Games and winning a medal,” says Pratima who competes in aquatics, equestrian, basketball, and snowsports for Special Olympics North Harbour.
Pratima was a non-travelling reserve for the 2013 World Winter Games and competed a comprehensive training schedule that rivalled many of the travelling athletes. She finished 2013 on a high at the National Summer Games winning a gold medal in equitation and two silver medals in dressage and working trails.
Pratima has been involved with Special Olympics for the past nine years and equestrian for five years. She is known for her easy nature and positive attitude, and is well loved by fellow athletes and coaches.
Outside of sport, Pratima works as a laundry assistant, and enjoys drawing, listening to music, dancing, and watching films.
