Running is part of Patrick Donovan’s life.
In addition to training with Special Olympics Hutt Valley’s athletics team, he also takes part in weekly Lower Hutt Park Runs, running 5km (in 19 minutes or less) each Saturday with runners from Athletics New Zealand and Hutt Valley Harriers; before heading into Wellington to train with Special Olympics Wellington’s athletics team at Newtown Park.
Quite simply, Patrick really enjoys running for fitness and for fun. In 2014 he entered the AMI Round the Bays run and completed the 6.5km run in an enviable 25.48 minutes. He has also competed in the Pelorus Trust Run for the past 10 years.
On top of this, he competes in tenpin bowling for Special Olympics, attends the gym three times a week (where a personal trainer takes him through a pylometic and weight training programme), walks for fitness, and does yoga. He also volunteers at the CCS Library in Wellington one day a week.
While Patrick has trained with Special Olympics Hutt Valley for the past 13 years and attended all Tier 1 and 2 events locally and regionally, the LA2015 Games will be the first time he has represented Special Olympics New Zealand overseas.
“I love running for my team. I really want to run for New Zealand and be a hero and win a medal,” he says.
