Hastings-based athlete Nicholas Anderson is a dedicated golfer. While his teammates at Special Olympics Hawke’s Bay took the winter off training Nicholas made the choice to continue, braving cold weather each week to hone his skills.
Nicholas has been involved with Special Olympics since 1998 at which time he was a member of the swimming squad.
When Special Olympics Hawke’s Bay introduced golf in 2002, Nicholas joined up straight away, adding the sport to his training schedule, which included tenpin bowling and a gym programme.
He travelled to the National Summer Games 2013 and came third in the individual stroke nine-hole competition (level 4). Nicholas says one of the highlights of the trip was visiting the Dunedin Chocolate Factory.
Nicholas studied Work and Life Skills (Polyventure) at Eastern Institute of Technology and now works in the kitchen at Earth Gardens in Napier where he prepares morning tea and lunch, and also assists the caretaker at Lucknow School in Havelock North. He recently moved out of home and now flats independently with one flatmate.
