Monique McEwen has been training with Special Olympics Manawatu for 14 years but is relatively new to bocce, having only picked up the sport three years’ ago.
She has proved to be an impressive player however and played at the Masters’ Games in Wanganui in February 2012. Her unified team came third in the competition.
Monique and her unified partner Olwyn Humphreys have played together since unified bocce was first introduced at Special Olympics New Zealand and they have an enviable bond and knowledge of each other’s game.
“My favourite thing about Special Olympics is meeting different people. I am really looking forward to representing my country overseas and meeting people from other cultures,” she says.
Outside of sport Monique works as a cleaner at Massey University. While she is based in Palmerston North Monique is an avid Crusaders rugby fan, due in large part to Daniel Carter who is her favourite sportsperson.
