Special Olympics Mangere athlete Huitahi Stockman has been training with Special Olympics for just three years but has already proved to be a fantastic all-round sportsman.
The 17-year-old will be representing Special Olympics New Zealand in basketball at the LA2015 Games but Huitahi is also an accomplished footballer, tenpin bowler, and table tennis player. He also plays touch rugby for Mt Richmond Special School and trains in cross-fit at the gym.
He has represented Special Olympics Mangere at several major events including the Trans Tasman Tournament in 2012 in Wellington (competing against Australian teams) and the Special Olympics National Summer Games 2013 in Dunedin.
Special Olympics Mangere selected him as its Player of the Year for 2014.
A huge fan of basketball Huitahi follows NBA on television and his favourite sportsperson is Kobe Bryant.
“I’m very happy to be selected for the World Summer Games. I am a very flexible player and a confident player. I enjoy watching the NBA, especially player Kobe Bryant. I love being part of the Special Olympics team and socialising with others,” he says.
