Meet some members of our Tenpin bowling team

Hamish Taverner

Palmerston North

What do you do in your role as a Global Messenger for Special Olympics New Zealand?

I speak on behalf of other athletes and I speak to Rotary members and dignitaries and I was the spokesperson for the 2009 Summer National Games.

What do you think of Greece?

It is a lovely place. It is hot but that is why we wear shorts all the time and drink lots of water.

What has been the highlight of the Games for you so far?

Swapping badges with other athletes. I've got these two caps full of badges and I've got a shirt at home. I got this one from David Rutherford. I've also been buying some caps for my family and postcards and magnets.

What music do you like?

I like Scorpions and I like ABBA to.

Do you like Greek food?
I like the fruit in the morning. One day I had the egg and it was very dry. And I like the chicken and meatballs in the evening.
What is your goal?

To win a medal, any medal. But if I don't I'm just happy I got a chance to come here.

Naomi and Anna-Marie

Anna-Marie Stevens

How has the competition gone for you?
Ok. I did doubles with Naomi and finished 4th and we won silver in the teams' event.
What's been the highlight for you?
Seeing the other side of the world and what it's like and meeting people from other cultures and making new friends.
How are you dealing with the heat?
I'm coping. It is really hot though. But I feel the cold very easily so I'm not bothered by it. Better hot than cold.
What do you miss about home?
I miss my family, my home, my double bed, my laptop to get on Facebook and email and I miss my work. I work as a house cleaner which helps elderly people who can't clean their own house.
Tell me about your pets?
I've got two cats, six fish, a dog and heaps of birds – budgies, cockatiels, doves, quails, finches.
Who is the funniest person on the New Zealand team?
Dr Paul. He cracks everyone up. And our coach Ian Baldwin is a real character.

Naomi Jackson

Papakura, Auckland
What do you miss about home?
I miss my husband, Wayne Jackson. He's been sick but he's better now. He works at the Countdown supermarket. He's been there for 25 years. I work as a teacher aide at a Rosehill Special School.
Do you like the food in Greece?
A little bit. It's not as bad as you think it is. You just have to go with the flow.
What are your hobbies?
I like to walk a lot and go to the gym. My hobby is bowling. I've been doing it for 17 years and I also do swimming.
