Rowena Massey

Rowena Massey, as Assistant Head of Delegation, applies an ‘athletic’ enthusiasm to the valuable administrative support she provides to team management.

Starting out as an Athletics Coach in 1995 for Special Olympics Counties, Onewhero based Rowena says her role has “morphed” into more of an administrative role.

“Because of my work and where I live, it became challenging getting to training and providing the support to my athletes that I wanted to. While my role has changed, I feel my skills help things run smoothly.

“I also find it very rewarding providing support to Max Brooking, our Head of Delegation.”

The Special Olympics World Summer Games is particularly exciting for Rowena, as this is the first time she has been involved in the Games team.

“I always wanted to be involved, but the timing wasn’t quite right. This year it is and I’m delighted to be part of a team of athletes and coaches, who have the common goal of striving to do their best for themselves, their families and Special Olympics New Zealand. And, of course, having the time of their lives while doing it!

“The Games will show New Zealanders the true passion that lies in competing in sport. Our athletes show dedication, hard work, respect for their fellow athletes, and graciousness – each of us could take note of this, as it would make a difference to our lives.”

Over nearly 20 years, Rowena has experienced a number of wonderful moments.

“The most special moments for me are empowering and nurturing athlete leaders, such as our Global Messengers. I have a huge amount of pride and enjoyment in seeing our athletes grow in confidence and reaching their goals.”

When she is not working hard for Special Olympics, Rowena manages her local Premiere and Reserve rugby teams, supporting senior players at New Zealand Rugby Union, serving on the committee member of the Onewhero Rugby Football Club and volunteering at the Counties Steelers game days.

“You can always make time in your life for things you are passionate about and a lot of what I do is about that – Special Olympics is something I always make time for!”
What I love about New Zealand Special Olympics:

Seeing the pure enjoyment on the faces of our athletes as they are given the opportunity to train and compete in sport, and reap the positive rewards in all areas of their lives that being involved in sport brings.
