Brent Kemp

The first words that come to mind for committed volunteer and Aquatics Coach, Brent Kemp, about his involvement in Special Olympics New Zealand is “thank you”.

“I am so grateful for all those who have given me the chance to work with some of the nicest people and athletes we have in New Zealand sport.”

Brent is also Head Coach for Special Olympics North Canterbury's swim team and has been with the team for about four years. He has been a swimming instructor for five years.

“The reason I got involved is that I wanted to do more and give back to a group of people and athletes who have helped change my outlook on life.”

The Games in Los Angeles will be Brent's first World Games however he did attend the Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games 2013 in Dunedin.

“There were many highlights but a special moment for me was seeing three of my swimmers on the podium together – first, second and third.”

Brent also helps a friend who is coaching a paralympic swim team, and says his own great support group enables him to make time for supporting others to achieve their potential.

“I find being involved allows people like myself and other New Zealanders to see that with a lot of hard work athletes with life challenges can succeed in sport just as much as mainstream athletes.”

What I love about Special Olympics New Zealand:

When they open the door for athletes with llfe challenges, the door is also open for people like myself; all you have to do is walk through. So … I did!
