Sherryl Saunders

Special Olympics Southland athlete Sherryl Saunders is an amazing all-rounder athlete. The 31-year-old athlete has been training with Special Olympics for 16 years and competes in aquatics, athletics, and basketball.

She has represented Southland on many occasions including the 2011 Trans Tasman Tournament in Wellington, where she was a key member of the basketball team, and National Summer Games around New Zealand. The LA2015 Games, however, will be the first time she has represented New Zealand.

Sherryl’s family have been involved with Special Olympics for years and her mother Alison is the Coordinator of Special Olympics Southland.

Sherryl, who is renowned for her loyalty to Southland is putting in extra hours training to ensure she makes the region and country proud in LA.
“I feel that I could do really well for New Zealand. I enjoy swimming and think that I’m pretty good,” she says (and we agree!).
