Neil Oliphant

Neil Oliphant is one of only two athletes from Special Olympics Tauranga to be selected for the LA2015 World Summer Games.

The 43-year-old has been involved with Special Olympics for 17 years and has played tenpin bowling for the past 12 years. At the recent National Summer Games 2013 in Dunedin, Neil made headlines for his role within the Special Olympics Tauranga team. He gave a stunning performance at the Games and contributed 200 points to the team’s overall score, which resulted in a gold medal.

For Neil, who lives at home with family, Special Olympics New Zealand provides a great opportunity to meet others and keep fit. He is looking forward to the World Summer Games as a way of enhancing his skill-set, both socially and in sport.

“I’m looking forward to extending my experience of tenpin bowling, and travelling and meeting other athletes,” he says.

Neil trains once a week with Special Olympics Tauranga and also walks for fitness. He works in the mailing section of the Bay of Plenty development centre Avalon.
