New Zealand and Australian athletes with intellectual disabilities competed at this years’ Special Olympics Trans Tasman Tournament.

Athletes from across New Zealand and Australia took part in a series of athletics and aquatics competitions at the third Trans Tasman Tournament, from 25-27 November in Hamilton.

The inaugural Tournament was held in Wellington in 2011 which saw teams from both sides of the Tasman compete in football and basketball.  The second Tournament focused on athletics, basketball, ten pin bowling and football was hosted by Special Olympics Australia in Cairns the following year.

The Trans Tasman Tournament was created to provide more competition opportunities for athletes, particularly those athletes that may not necessarily get the opportunity to compete internationally for a variety of reasons. This may include the challenges that athletes can face with World Games events where the duration is much longer.  This event has the skills and abilities of all athletes top of mind including those with high needs/low ability.

Hamilton is home to Special Olympics Waikato, a Club of 95 athletes and passionate volunteers who were wonderful hosts to the athletes from across New Zealand and Australia.

All athletics events took place at Porritt Stadium, Crosby Road, Chedworth Park while the aquatics events were held at Waterworld, Garnett Avenue, Forest Lake.
