Nicholas Fyfe skied before he could walk, literally - his father skied down the mountain with him in a backpack as a baby. So it was no wonder skiing became second nature to him.
"We are all skiers and from an early age Nicholas was expected to ski as well. He has no fear of anything. He'll go down anything we go down," says Karen Erenstrom, Nicholas' mother, who is part of the Special Olympics New Zealand World Winter Games management team.
Nicholas has been training with Special Olympics for about eight years and is also an accomplished powerlifter and keen basketballer. He trains at Powerhouse and Les Mills Gym in Wellington every week, and competes in mainstream and Special Olympics competitions.
Karen jokes that Nicholas, who also works for Days Bay Pavilion stacking firewood for its wood-fired pizzas, "has the busiest schedule of anyone in our family".
