It was 'Snow Cake', a film about an autistic woman's passion for skiing, that inspired David Ee's mum to travel to Whakapapa to see if her son would take to the sport as well. David, who has Asperger's Syndrome, immediately fell in love with the snow and skiing.
"He had tried other sports like swimming and basketball but skiing came naturally to David. I couldn't get over how easy it was for him. He feels really safe and at home on the snow," says proud mum Jennifer Tang. Just six years after that first skiing experience, David headed to the World Winter Games.
"I was nominated by my Club to go to the 2009 Games in Idaho but I wasn't selected for the team or to be a reserve. I worked really hard to be selected this time around, it was a wonderful opportunity for me and I am very grateful," says David.
David's training includes fortnightly speed training at Snowplanet on Auckland's North Shore, and going for regular runs.
