Not even a broken elbow could stop Amy Mackres in her bid to be part of the 2013 World Winter Games team. Since beginning to ski seven years ago, Amy has become a regular fixture at Snowplanet on Auckland's North Shore, training all year round. She also swims weekly with Special Olympics North Harbour's team.
To ensure she was in top form at the Games in January 2013 Amy added walking to her fitness programme so she could improve her muscular strength and aerobic fitness. She also focussed on improving her diet, so muffins and hot chocolates with marshmallows were off the menu for a while!
Says Amy's mum Denise, "We firmly believe that each of us is special and one of a kind and having a disability doesn't mean you can't contribute and participate fully in society."
