Napier-based Shayne Crabtree has a busy few months ahead of him, arranging a training camp, ensuring coaches and athletes have the latest information from Special Olympics Asia Pacific about the Games, and that the athletes are on task with their training programmes. High on his agenda is maintaining the 'fun' aspect of the training and competition. "Fun is very important in sport," he says.
The Head of Delegation role is something Shayne has been heading towards for years, albeit inadvertently. He was Assistant Head of Delegation at the World Summer Games 2011 in Athens, Greece, and last year led the Special Olympics Hawke's Bay team to the Trans Tasman Tournament in Cairns, Australia. He has been involved with Special Olympics New Zealand for the best part of 20 years, and has organised countless football events for Special Olympics Hawke's Bay.
