Nicola Hardy

A proud Southlander, Nicola Hardy has trained athletes from Special Olympics Southland in aquatics, athletics, and basketball, for the past three years since returning to New Zealand from her OE.

Nicola was the Assistant Head of the Special Olympics Southland delegation and Head Coach of the basketball team that travelled to the Trans Tasman Tournament 2012 in Cairns, Australia (“The Southland basketball team won its division and took home the gold medal against some very tough competition,” she says). She was also the Assistant Head of the Southland Delegation throughout this international tournament.

Nicola has considerable experience working with people with intellectual disabilities as a PE and Special Needs teacher in New Zealand, and overseas.

Recently Nicola moved to Auckland to work for Sport Auckland as the Community Sport Coordinator based at Tamaki Primary School. Within this role she works closely with teachers and principals to provide curriculum support in physical education, organise the delivery of various KiwiSport projects and runs several sports competitions each term for 15 primary schools. She is now also volunteering with Special Olympics Howick-Pakuranga, Tamaki and our other Auckland branches.

“I have always had a strong interest in sport and a real passion for working with people with special needs. I am really excited about going to the Asia Pacific Regional Games with the New Zealand Special Olympics team. It will be a fantastic opportunity and experience for all of the New Zealand athletes who have all worked so hard in their training and preparation for the trip,” she says.

Help our Asia Pacific Games 2013 team achieve their best in Newcastle!
