Lyn Ryan

Special Olympics Manawatu’s Lyn Ryan and her husband Mike [Special Olympics New Zealand’s National Sport & Coaching Director] are bocce experts.

Lyn has been involved with Special Olympics for 30 years after three of her four children began training with our organisation. Her daughter Kylie-Maree used to train in aquatics and basketball, while sons Joshua and Conrad continue to train and compete in a number of Special Olympics sports including Alpine skiing, aquatics, athletics, bocce, football, golf, and tenpin bowling. Both Joshua and Conrad have represented Special Olympics New Zealand internationally. Her other son Glenn is a Sergeant in the New Zealand Police based in Palmerston North, and has volunteered for Special Olympics.
“At one stage both Conrad and Joshua had sports training every night of the week, with a sports event every weekend. Suffice to say Special Olympics has always played a big role in our lives,” says Lyn.
Lyn is an active member of the community. In addition to her work with Special Olympics New Zealand, Lyn has volunteered for Parent to Parent (a support network for parents of children with disabilities), and Phoenix Supported Employment. In 2005 Lyn and Mike received a Palmerston North City Council civic honour award for their commitment to people with disabilities and in 2008 she and Mike won the inaugural Attitude TV Community Award.
