Helen Johnson

For Palmerston North-based Helen Johnson the Asia Pacific Games 2013 will be a unique experience.

She has represented New Zealand before internationally, helping to coordinate the New Zealand team competing at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2011 in Athens, Greece, and the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2007 in Shanghai China.

This time, however, her daughter Keri-Anne will be joining her overseas as part of the 22-strong New Zealand team. Keri-Anne is competing in bocce, while Helen is the Head Coach for table tennis.

“Due to the tight programme I doubt very much that I will even get to see Keri-Anne play bocce, but it is awesome to have us both in the New Zealand team going to the Asia Pacific games as there are lots of other experiences we will share and can talk about for many years to come,” says Helen.  Helen is especially looking forward to leading Special Olympics New Zealand’s first table tennis team to compete at an international event.

“There is a strong representation from the Manawatu region in the New Zealand team at the Asia Pacific games. Each member is working hard on their training, and we get together every month to do the Cooper Fitness test. We have created a great team environment supporting each other with our personal training programmes leading up to the Asia Pacific Games,” says Helen.

Help our Asia Pacific Games 2013 team achieve their best in Newcastle!
