Gillian Harrington

The Special Olympics Asia Pacific Games 2013 will be Dr Gillian Harrington’s first foray into the wonderful world of Special Olympics competition. After seeing an advertisement on the Waikato District Health Board’s intranet for team doctor, she jumped at the chance to volunteer her services.

The team doctor role is a perfect fit for Gillian. The sports fan grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland with family members, and family friends, with intellectual disabilities.
“The health of people with intellectual disabilities has always been very important to me,” she says.
Gillian is a cardiology registrar at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton and has also worked in renal medicine, both here and in Newcastle, England, where she trained.
Gillian met the team for the first time at its training camp in Wellington over Queen’s Birthday and says she “gelled immediately” with the athletes.
“The athletes are amazing. They’re so dedicated to their training. I’m really excited about the Games, and working with Special Olympics New Zealand. I’m keen to be involved in anything and everything Special Olympics needs me to for,” she says.

Help our Asia Pacific Games 2013 team achieve their best in Newcastle!
