In 2003, Darren Gordon brought home a gold medal from the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Dublin, Ireland competing in tenpin bowling. He is aiming to repeat the triumph at the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games, this time in table tennis.
Darren has been training with Special Olympics New Zealand since it began almost 30 years ago. He picked up table tennis during a cruise with his parents a few years ago. His playing partners on the cruise loved the games, and by the time Darren returned home, he had friends booking him in to play with them.
“My favourite thing about Special Olympics is that it gives me the opportunity to play sport,” says Darren, who also works for Altus Enterprises, which specialises in packaging.
