Special Olympics Wellington athlete Damon Catchpole has been involved with Special Olympics New Zealand for 27 years.
“The thing I like most about Special Olympics is that it is full of very nice people. I love my coach,” he says.
Damon trains weekly at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Kilbirnie and also works out at the gym.
He is also a talented artist with Alpha Art Studio. Damon paints, and knits bags out of recycled plastic shopping bags. One of his works was exhibited at Bowen House in Wellington in 2011 as part of Arts Access Aotearoa's ‘Make/Believe’ exhibition. The curator described the piece as ““a strong three-dimensional and tactile presence”, while a Dominion Post reporter wrote, “With their alluring elegant jellyfish tentacle trails, they wouldn't be out of place on a fashion week catwalk.” In 2012 he was interviewed on radio about the Alpha Art Studio ‘Set in Emotion’ exhibition.
