The Trans Tasman Tournament 2012 took place in tropical Cairns Australia from 8 - 11 October. Over 300 athletes from New Zealand and Australia competed in athletics, basketball, football and tenpin bowling in another very successful Tournament.
The New Zealand contingent included 76 athletes and 27 volunteers from Special Olympics Auckland, Howick-Pakuranga, Manukau, Hawkes Bay, North Taranaki, Manawatu, Kapiti, Mana, Hutt Valley, Wellington, Southland and Canterbury.
Our teams achieved impressive results in their sports (check out official results) - congratulations to our athletes on their achievements and a very big thank you to all of the volunteers and families for their support.
An amazing array of photos were captured over the four days.
The Tournament was developed to provide more competition opportunities to Special Olympics athletes, particularly those who may not have had the opportunity to travel to an international event previously. This enables more athletes to experience the thrill of being part of a team, for many this will be their first international competition, and for some, their first time travelling overseas.
The event also featured Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the raising of the Special Olympics flag and lighting of the cauldron.
