Multi-sport Special Olympics Manawatu athlete Matthew Westwood is thrilled to be selected to represent New Zealand at next years World Summer Games, and competing overseas is what he is most looking forward to.

During his nine years with Special Olympics, Matthew has competed in nearly 90 competitions including Tier One Ribbon and Certificate events, Tier Two Regionals and three National Summer Games as well as three Trans-Tasman competitions.

While athletics is his main sport, he has also competed in basketball, football and powerlifting.

Matthew is now training four times a week as he prepares to hit the track in Abu Dhabi.

Matthew’s local athletics coach, Delwyn Davies, is his role model. "As like me, she is committed to training and is hard working" Matthew says.

If he could change his world for better, Matthew would strive to get more hours and a higher paid job.

Since joining Special Olympics, Matthew feels he is a lot more confident and has made lots of new friends, gets to travel & compete in events throughout New Zealand.

Winning the Sport Manawatu “Athletes with a Disability Secondary Sports Award” in 2012 (for his achievements in football and athletics) is what Matthew is most proud of.

Woodwork, car maintenance and gaming are favourite hobbies and interests that keep Matthew busy.
