Swimming and Powerlifting are the sports of passion for Howick Pakuranga Special Olympics athlete James Wilson.

Powerlifting will be the main focus for James in Abu Dhabi and he is really looking forward to the chance to compete against athletes from other countries.

At the World Summer Games James will compete in the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift, and is looking to improve on his personal best lifts of 145kg, 77.5 kg and 137.5 kg respectively.

His goal to achieve a combined three lift total of 500 kg.

James swims once or twice a week and does powerlifting gym work four times a week.

Role models for James are his coaches, as they are determined and disciplined, "just like me" James says.

If he could change the world for the better James would have more funding and opportunities for people with disabilities.

According to James his life has changed since joining Special Olympics as he gets to take part in sport and not just being a spectator.

James is most proud of the fact that he is now a Global Messenger.

In his spare time, between training, James plays video games and follows his favourite sports teams.
