Liam Bartley

Special Olympics North Otago swimmer Liam Bartley has been involved in Special Olympics six years ago.

As a swimmer Liam has competed in over 20 swim meets across the whole of South Island, since he joined the programme as a Special Olympics Mid Canterbury athlete.

Liam’s favourite hobbies includes swimming, cars, fishing and Paua diving. No surprise then that his favourite television show is the ITM Fishing Show.

Being a part of the New Zealand team that competes in Abu Dhabi and competing against the rest of the world is what Liam is most looking to as he prepares to compete at the World Summer Games next March.

Getting a gold medal at the 2017 National Summer Games in Wellington is what he is most proud of

Liam goes to the gym twice a week and swims six times a week and has set himself a goal to be the best he can be.

Being selected for the World Games, gaining his drivers licence and winning that gold medal at the Nationals is just some of the things that Liam is most proud of.

His parents are Liam’s role models, “my dad recently passed away but he was very hardworking, compassionate & sporty, so I would like to be like him “Liam says.

Since joining Special Olympics Liam feels that he is more confident, fitter and was selected as North Otago Sports Person with a Disability of the Year for 2017.
