Melissa Donoghue

Global Messenger and Special Olympics Waikato athlete Melissa Donoghue has been involved with her local programme since 2007.

Melissa will be competing in her favourite sport of swimming when she travels to Abu Dhabi next March with the Special Olympics New Zealand team.

Doing jigsaw puzzles, knitting and art are Melissa favourite past times when she is not in the pool training. Something she does six days a week as she builds towards the World Summer Games.

Melissa is really looking forward to meeting new people and travel, and just the whole new experiences the trip will bring.

New Zealand and International rower Brooke Donoghue is one of Melissa’s role models, the other being Paralympian Sophie Pascoe.

“I am more confident in myself” is how Melissa feels her life has changed since joining Special Olympics and being selected for the World Games team is what she is most proud of.

Through the Special Olympics Healthy Athletes programme Melissa feels that she can see better now as “they picked up I needed stronger glasses”.
