Portia Johnson

Since joining Special Olympics back in 2007, originally as an Equestrian rider, Special Olympics Te Awamutu athlete Portia Johnson has changed her jodhpurs and riding crop for swim togs and bathing cap, when she competes as a swimmer when she travels with the New Zealand team to Abu Dhabi in March 2019.

“Competing for New Zealand” was goal of Portia and something that she has now achieved when she competes on the world stage in the pool in Abu Dhabi.

Portia trains two to three times a week as she prepares herself for what is ahead.

Paralympics athlete Sophie Pascoe is one of Melissa’s role models as “she swims and has a disability” Portia says; the other role model she has is Taylor Swift “because like me she is kind hearted”.

Portia feels that since joining Special Olympics her life has changed because she “has done more interesting things like becoming a Global Messenger and travelling more independently”.

Having a paid job, flatting in a mainstream flat and her swimming achievements is what she is most proud of.

When not training, working (at Fairfax media in Hamilton) or competing, Portia enjoys riding horses at her local RDA, catching up with friends, walking dogs or just listening to music.
