Swimmer Deshan Walallavita has been involved in Special Olympics since 2008 when he originally joined the programme while attending high school in the Waitako.

In 2009 he transitioned in the Special Olympics Te Awamutu club and has trained and competed in both swimming and football on a regular basis.

Deshan is really looking forward to competing against swimmers from other countries and to do his best while showing good sportsmanship.

His personal best events include the 50 metre Butterfly and 100 meter freestyle

Deshan exercises five times a week and does swim training four times a week. In an attempt to achieve his goal of swimming a personal best time and hopefully winning himself a medal.

His local swim coach Shelly Blair, is Deshan’s role model, as she is just as passionate about swimming as he is, and she encourages everyone to be a part of the team so they should support one another.

Being a good friend and helping others is what Deshan believes would change the world for a better place.

Deshan says that Special Olympics has changed his life since joining as “I get to train and compete in my favourite sport. I have met good friends and had enjoyable experiences at competitions”.

Achieving personal bests, winning medals and seeing his team achieve the same is what Deshan is most proud of.

When not in the pool Deshan’s interests and hobbies include Art, cooking, computers, sports and travel.

Having his eyes, teeth and feet checked at last years National Games Healthy Athletes screening has help Deshan in his sport. And he received a new pair of glasses when he was at the 2009 Dunedin National Summer Games.

Deshan volunteers at his local Pat Ave Special School, when he is not training or competing.
