Katie McMilan

Katie has been involved in Special Olympics since 2006 when she attended an Auckland Schools athletics event.

It was around this time she also took up tenpin bowling. A sport that she is no solely focussed on, as it is now the only sport she competes in with her Special Olympics Waitakere club

Katie is really looking forward to the World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi because she says it will give her the chance to meet new friends, compete against other countries, as well as travelling to a new country.

Katie’s personal best score in her beloved Tenpin Bowling is bowling a 180 game, something she wants to do again at the World Games.

She trains every week and plans to train a lot more in the build to the trip in March

If she could make the World a better place, Katie would stop people using plastics bags and instead give them recycle bags that she would make.

Katie says, that her life different since joining Special Olympics “as I have met lots of new people from all over New Zealand. As I have competed in lots of places not only in Auckland, but also including Dunedin and Wellington” when Katie attended the 2013 and 2017 National Summer Games.

Playing for New Zealand is what Katie is most proud of

In her spare time Katie likes to knit and sew, when she is not working at the Warehouse (where she has worked for the past 16 years) or at her local Kindy, or making bread.
