Charlotte Aroa

Special Olympics Waikato equestrian rider Charlotte Aroa has competed in multiple sports during her seven years with Special Olympics.

The 19 year old school student has competed in many sports including Athletics, Bowling, Football, Swimming but her main focus sport is Equestrian.

First starting with Special Olympics when competing in the AWD schools events, Charlotte transitioned into the Waikato Club and has really enjoyed her time with the club; and was really pleased to have been selected to compete in her first National Summer Games last year when they that were held in Wellington.

Mum is Charlottes favourite role model, as "she is a strong, independent woman who stands up for those who are less fortunate, no matter the personal cost to her" Charlotte says.

When she is not training Charlotte's hobbies & interests include enjoying listening to Kate Perry and attending Starjam.

Charlotte is most proud of being a part of Special Olympics despite her challenges.

And her life has changed since joining Special Olympics by her now being more comfortable with her abilities when matched against other similar athletes.

Having her own horse has meant that Charlotte rides 3 or 4 times a week. And her goal is to do her best in Abu Dhabi.

Having access to a wide range of Healthy Athletes screenings that are provided through Special Olympics has enabled her "to get checked for things I may otherwise not have" Charlotte says
