Wade Ledingham

Special Olympics Hutt Valley athlete Wade Ledingham is hoping to use his new role as a Global Messenger to break down barriers about people with disabilities.

“I would like more people to feel that people with disabilities can do anything given a chance,” Wade says. “And I would like people to be more respectful of people with disabilities.”

The 30 year-old competes in athletics and joined Special Olympics Hutt Valley about 10 years ago, after an earlier stint with the Whangarei Club while living there. He has also competed in swimming and soccer in the past.

“I have made a lot of friends away from Hutt Valley and it helped me do the best I can do. It has got me out of the house and given me something I like doing. It keeps me fit and happy.”

As well as his sporting commitments Wade is also regularly involved in community work and fundraising, for his Club and for the New Zealand Down Syndrome Association. He also works at Burger King two days a week as a cleaner, making burgers and handling deliveries.

Wade believes being a Global Messenger will give him confidence, allow him to travel and make more friends, and give him more opportunities to achieve his goals.
