Shonagh Clarke

Shonagh Clarke is what some might call a Special Olympics veteran – she’s been taking part in Special Olympics events for about 30 years!

The 51 year-old competes with Special Olympics Southland in ten pin bowling. She has represented New Zealand twice, at the World Summer Games in USA in 1991, and at the Asia Pacific Games in Australia in 2013.
“My favourite thing about Special Olympics is representing my province and country in my sport of ten pin bowling,” Shonagh says.
“I also like meeting new people around the world and gaining new friends nationally and internationally, and keeping fit!”

As well as competing in ten pin bowling, Shonagh has been Athlete Representation on the Special Olympics Southland Committee for 10 years, is secretary of the Club’s Athletes’ Committee, treasurer of her bowling league and works full time as a mail clerk at SBS Bank.

Now as a Global Messenger Shonagh is looking forward to travelling to the training courses and graduation, and meeting the other 2018 Global Messengers.

“I think it is an awesome achievement in my Special Olympics and an honour to be selected for nomination and then be successful.”
