Ryan Stewart

Special Olympics Otago athlete Ryan Stewart is Special Olympics mad. He initially got involved with ten pin bowling and soccer but now focuses on powerlifting. He took home three gold and one silver medal from the four power lifting disciplines he competed in at the 2017 National Summer Games, and has numerous regional medals to his name.

“I have met lots of people and made new friends and have had the opportunitfy to participate in a sport I really enjoyed,” Ryan says. “I have become more confident and fit. I look forward to every session.”

"A number of years ago I was assistant manager of the Otago University premier rugby team which gave me the opportunity to meet with well-known rugby players and that gave me confidence when talking to local celebrities."

When he found out he was going to be a Global Messenger, Ryan felt very proud of his achievement.

“Now I’m a Global Messenger I can tell people about the great work of Special Olympics. I'm looking forward to improving my writing skills and public speaking.”

Outside of Special Olympics Ryan enjoys doing volunteer and paid work, spending time with friends and family and travelling. He works as an Administrative Assistant at a real estate firm, at Sport Otago and the Halberg Disability Foundation, as well as doing a paper run!
