At just 18 years of age, Toby is already a seasoned Special Olympics athlete. He joined the North Harbour Club around nine years ago and was a founding member of Special Olympics Greenhithe.
Toby trains in basketball, football and athletics and has competed in a number of regional events and at the 2013 National Summer Games. He is the athlete representative on the Special Olympics Greenhithe Committee and supports the Club by leading the basketball warm-up each week and recruiting volunteers for ribbon days. He also assisted with the recent North Harbour/Greenhithe ‘Have A Go’ day by preparing and distributing a poster about the event.
“Because of basketball I have become a big fan of the NZ Breakers and the Super City Rangers. I am trying to get Special Olympics Greenhithe to play in a curtain raiser game for the Super City Rangers.”
As well as his training and Club commitments, Toby is a full-time student at Takapuna Grammar and attends a PHAB group for young people with disabilities every week. He’s now looking forward to the new challenge of becoming a Global Messenger.
