Rochelle Waters’ history with Special Olympics has been a long and successful one, having started competing with Special Olympics Canterbury when she was just eight years old.
Since then Rochelle has attended three National Summer Games, winning two gold medals in swimming. She has also won numerous ribbons at local and regional competitions, and took out Special Olympics Canterbury’s Athlete of the Year Award in 2014.
Rochelle is now looking forward to her new role as Global Messenger.
“It’s pretty cool and it’s a great opportunity for me. I really want to get more confident speaking in front of people and to get people involved with Special Olympics.”
In her last year of school Rochelle completed a supported learning Hospitality course through Christchurch Polytech. She now works part-time at the Darfield Bakery and does work experience at a local school and kindergarten. She’s also currently learning to become a dance teacher.
Rochelle is clearly focused on her future and has set herself a number of goals, including learning to drive and getting her own flat.
“Through Special Olympics I have made lots of new friends and it keeps me fit. I’m really looking forward to being a Global Messenger and seeing if I can do lots of new things.”
