Special Olympics Kapiti athlete Michael Banner is no stranger to competition.
Since he joined Special Olympics eight years ago, Michael has competed in an impressive 87 events in basketball, football and athletics, including the Special Olympics New Zealand National Summer Games in Palmerston North in 2009, and Dunedin in 2013, where he won a bronze medal.
Michael was also part of the silver medal-winning New Zealand basketball team which travelled to the World Summer Games in Athens, Greece in 2011. He describes the international event as an “awesome experience”, where he made new friends from all around the world.
“Special Olympics has helped me to gain more confidence in myself, and also to go to many events I would not have been able to otherwise.”
When asked about being accepted into the Global Messenger programme for 2016, Michael says he is “honoured and humbled”.
“I’m looking forward to learning more about Special Olympics, getting more people involved, and gaining more confidence in myself.”
Michael also works part-time as a support worker for IDEA Services, looking after a young person in a wheelchair.
