James Bott

Special Olympics North Harbour athlete James Bott credits Special Olympics for helping him feel accepted and part of a community.

“It’s really great to get the opportunities to play sports that you might not get in mainstream sports. I also really like getting together with people like myself and making new friends.”

Enthusiastic and energetic James, who also works as a Grocery Assistant at Pak’nSave, first got into Special Olympics nine years ago through a friend and has never looked back. His involvement with Special Olympics has seen him compete in swimming,  football and golf, and he is now focused firmly on golf. James has also attended three National Summer Games, in Christchurch, Palmerston North and Dunedin.

The 33 year-old is now looking forward to getting stuck in to the Global Messenger programme.

“It’s a really good opportunity to get out there and get the word out about Special Olympics, because lots of people don’t know about it. I want people with special needs to know that they can play sports and be rewarded for it.

“I’d also really like to see a little documentary made about Special Olympics.”
